Barriers was my attempt to address my severe bed bug phobia and gain a sense of closure. In thinking about this phobia, I had fantasies of different ways I could protect myself from infestation. While the images become more extreme as the series progresses, each new preventative step represents a situation that would, in fact, lower my anxiety. This results in a paradoxical relationship between the decreasing comfort of the viewer and the increasing comfort I feel when progressing through the series.
